Light of Massai

The Rotary Club of Dublin Central continues to work closely with the ‘Light of Maasi’ charity to raise funds for the tiny village of Rombo in Kenya. Our work with the charity has greatly improved the lives of hundreds of people who live in the village of Rombo in Kenya.Our ace card is Irish woman Elaine Bannon who has lived in the bush with the Maasai people since 2002. Elaine has devoted her life to her work with the children in the Rombo region, and her presence in Kenya helps us to ensure that all the donor money gets directly to where it’s needed, as she continues her work in the areas of healthcare, clean water and education.

Light of Massai Volunteer House

One of our biggest projects last year was to build a volunteers’ house, to bring much needed expertise into the region. This project should have been completed last year, but everything in Africa takes longer than it should. However, we have stuck with the process and we are almost there. Hopefully we will be complete by the end of May 2011.

As you will imagine, there is a real need for …..doctors, nurses, teachers, water engineers, builders, sports organisers / trainers, clothing experts, environmental / conservation experts, women empowerment information, agricultural experts, animal welfare advisors, childcare and youth development organizers, and so on. The list is endless.

Even if one was to travel to Rombo just to witness the work of the ‘Light of Massai’ charity (www.lightofmaasai.com), one would have an authentic experience of life in Africa, while at the same time validating Elaine’s work. As you know, Elaine loves to see visitors, especially from home.

Previously completed projects include:

  • The fitting out of two health clinics;
  • The provision of two water tanks and five water wells;
  • The provision of 650 school desks;
  • The provision of two houses for teachers

We are attempting to complete the following:

  • The provision of a volunteers’ house in Rombo…10 trekkers climbed Kilimanjaro in March 2009 – the highest mountain in Africa – to help raise funds to build the volunteers’ house in Rombo. This house will bring other volunteers into the area of Rombo.
  • Further fitting out work on medical clinics.
  • The provision of a small dormitory and secondary school for boys.
  • More water wells.
