Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.
The Rotary Club of Dublin Central has been involved in many local community service projects, most recently:
supporting the creation of a nurture garden & outside classroom at the Dublin Phoenix Park special needs school. Here we also provide hands-on support to keep the garden perfect. A big reward for the kids is to have fun at the trampoline we donated,
helping the environment, cleaning once a year a stretch of the Royal canal in the inner Dublin city.
sponsoring Fighting words, which provides free tutoring and mentoring in creative writing and related arts to as many children, young adults and adults with special needs as we can reach. https://www.fightingwords.ie/about-us
Our club members are fully engaged in Rotaries national Youth-leader ship programme, where young secondary school students get the opportunity to share their achievements and shine in interviews conducted by our members. The 24 top scoring finalists visit the Irish parliament in Dublin, the Northern Irish parliament in Belfast and the European Parliament in Brussels to learn first hand how our parliamentary democracy works at national and European level. The students love it and its rewarding for us to see the many young talents we have in Ireland.
The Rotary Foundation
The Rotary Foundation transforms voluntary contributions made by Rotarians and friends into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.
Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than 4 billion Euro on life-changing, sustainable projects, advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
What impact can one donation have?
For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected from polio.
$50 can provide clean water to help fight waterborne illness.
$500 can launch an antibullying campaign and create a safe environment for children.
A big Foundation project: End-Polio-Now / PolioPlus
Rotary’s top priority is the global eradication of the highly infectious disease Poliomyelitis, that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The poliovirus spreads person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide contributing over billion Euro via Rotaries PolioPlus programme.
It is a huge success. From more than a 100 countries affected by the disease in 1988 only two remain. This year the World Health Organisation declared Africa to be free of polio. Now we work hard to eradicate Polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan through vaccinations, monitoring poliovirus transmission, and other activities.
Our club supports that the goal of global polio eradication by:
Holding public events to raise awareness for Polioplus
Organising fund raisers like Purple4Polio, where purple crocus flowers are planted in schools and public places in cooperation with students.
Members going to affected countries as volunteers to help with vaccination and other supporting activities.
We are so close to make the world certified polio-free. If you are interested to support this worthwhile cause, simply get in touch with us via the Contact/Visit Us page.
